ok, I want to take several pictures, and add them to a canvas. (to be one picture).
I have photoshop 7.0 if that helps.
Thanks
Bonus question: how do I transform a color picture to be black and white? |

Do you want to use the whole picture(s), or just objects within them?
To learn about Black and White photos, check out the question about them in this forum.

The whole picture, but it'd be nice to know how to just cut out parts as well.
thanks |

Whole picture collages are all about image size. The two biggest decisions you have to make are how big you want each individual image to be, and how big you want the overall image to be.
So let's say, as an example, you want an 8x10 image made up of smaller 1x2 images. Let's start by creating the overall "canvas". Go to File>New. In the dialog box, set the width as 10 inches, the height as 8 inches and the resolution as 300 pixels/inch, and click OK.
Now, let's start putting our images on the canvas. Go to File>Open and select the first picture. Chances are it's bigger than the 1x2 image size we want. Go to Image>Image Size. First, check the "Constrain proportions" and "Resample Image" boxes. set the resolution to 300 pixels/inch (the same as our main document) and the width at 2 inches. The heighth will automatically adjust itself, due to the constrain proportions setting. It may be slightly more or less than 1 inch, due to the fact that it's keeping the image ratio the same. Click OK. Now go to the Move tool (V), and drag it over to our main document, and drop it. Now you can move it around on the main document to position it.
Continue in this manner until you have your collage. There are other ways to accomplish the same thing, but they generally require a greater knowledge of Photoshop. This method works well, is relatively simple, and should let you get on with your project with a minimum of fuss.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Good luck with your collage!
