I have been kind of hording this to myself for a couple months. I stumbled upon this by accident while tinkering with the Quick Mask mode. I figured I'd post it if anyone needed a similar effect:
1) Create a canvas with dimension 500 X 500 and draw a simple rectangle:
2) Add a bevel to this rectangle with following information:
Click on the image to view it at its original size
3) Create a smaller rectangle (mine is about 15 pixels smaller on each side). In this rectangle you will put the paint / sticker that you wish to be scratched off.
4) With this 'paint' rectangle selected enter Quick Mask Mode (press q) and go to filter > distort > ocean ripple. Enter 1 and 13 for the two options (in that order).
5) While still in quick mask mode you may chose to resize it slightly, simply transform such that the edge of the paint / sticker cuts the rippled area in half, like so:
6) Now simply exit Quick mask mode (pressing q), select the inverse (ctrl + I) and delete.
7) For added effect you can add drop shadow and a slight bevel with the following stats:
Click on the image to view it at its original size
My final effect, after setting the paint to blend mode Multiply and adding dirt spots looks like this:
Tell me what you all think or other potential ways to make easy paint chips. I am still looking for easy, fast ways to make scratched paint effects on complex images. |

Thanks for the feedback.
Excruciating, what technique were you using before my way, I would to try it out.
I will be the first to admit my method does not give entirely realistic results, but it is the best method I can find for non regular shapes short of drawing each tear by hand. If anyone has a different way or discovered a variation of this that yields a more realistic result please send it my way - it's never too late to learn new methods! |
