After slicing an image, choosing Save For Web, and then choosing one of the jpg presets from the drop down list, then clicking on Save, it shows me in the next "Save Optimized As" window that the Save As Type file type is gif - and there is no jpg on the list that I can choose. Why is my ability to save as jpg slices gone? I've not made any changes to the default settings and I'm not sure how to get it back... I'm only moderately skilled at Photoshop (skilled enough to create my web site mockups and slice and so on...) but if someone could point me in the right direction, or to a tutorial for this process that would be great. am using Photoshop CS (version 8 or 9?)

On this same note, I have noticed that often the slices (when they worked before) will have weird names such as Layout_12-13 or some such "overlapping" of slice numbers although, from what I can tell the slices do not actually overlap... what is THIS all about?

thanks very much for the help!

bbw, I hope you don't mind me tagging along with your post, as I have another problem with the 'save for web' function. Maybe this additional question will get us some attention...

I'm a newbie with photoshop so I seem to have lots of questions.

I ownloaded a PSD template from the web and made some minor changes (text editting mostly). Then when I tried to 'save for web' for the edited PSD, I noticed when I click on some of the slices, a yellow trianble warning sign would show up at the bottom of the window, saying the slice may not show up correctly in a browser. I did not even edit any of the slices that have problems, so I don't know why this is . And after I save the slices, the ones with the warning signs indeed would not show up when I viewed the .html page. So basically I had a picture with several blank rectangles.

Can anyone please help with this problem? I have spent over a day trying to fix this and it is getting very frustrating. Any help is highly appreciated.

That is a new one on me too... And I never HAVE figured out that one problem. And I have never been real succesful at giving some consistency/control to my naming...

I have not been back to this forum since last year - I figured I was just too "new" or unknowledgeable for them to spend their time on me! Good luck with your problem tho!!!

bbw: Could you explain your problem a little further and add a few screenshots?
jeffs: Could you provide us with the .psd. It would be easiest to investigate it this way.

Have you tried clicking 'save' anyway and seeing what file format it comes out in? I have CS3 here, but I have some memory of earlier versions of Photoshop displaying .gif at all times, but the output is correct. Have you tried this?

This one's an easy fix Very Happy
When you get to the second stage of that process (the "Save Optimized As" window), below "Save As Type" there's a drop-down box called "Settings".

Drop-down this box and click "Other": here you'll get a huge number of options - many of which effect the final name of your file.

I like to set this up so that no naming conventions are followed at all - so that the image is named exactly what I type when I "Save Optimized As". If you would like to do this as well, then the settings are:

Slices > Default Slice Naming: "slice" none none none none none
Saving Files > File Naming: "doc. name" none none none none none none none .ext
Saving Files > Optimized Files: make sure that "Put Images in Folder: images" is unchecked

I hope you don't have any trouble finding these options - if you do, let me know and I'll post pictures.

Hope this helps! Smile

I'll try it and see next time I have to do some slicing and dicing! I Thanks for the tip... I have since not had that problem with the program forcing a certain file extension on me... that one file was the only one - weird... And so I'll skip the screen shots and further explanation Etheryte but thanks. If I recall correctly I rebuilt that file from scratch into a new psd and it worked for me. Hey thanks for the responses!!
