hi
i made a document which is around 16 mb in size. i am not able to save it for web. it says size too big to save for web dimensions.
is there a way to compress file size?
also is there a way to really compress the files that big without affecting the resolution on screen and off screen? i made them at 300 ppi.

thanks for helping.

hi,
1. you didn't say what yor present format is in.. is that 16 meg psd file or 16 mpg jpg file...
2. is this just for displaying on the net or is it very important for printing..!!
3. your best formats are your tif and png but you only get appx 50% compression without no loss of quality .... now your jpg you can get 90% compression but you lose a fair amount of quality..

4. now you have your dpi setting for 300!!! ... well that maybe needed if you required high printing quality... but just for viewing... i would change it to about 72-100 dpi.... that alone will drastically reduce the file size and i don't think it will effect dispaly quality all that much!! ...

the format i used was .png. maybe thats why its that big in size. i'll try saving it as .jpg this time. and sure i cant compromise on the ppi value. it HAS to be 300 for i think i'll be printing it sometime.

thanks for helping me know the difference between the file types. really i never thought it was all that important to know Razz.

thanks once again.

Can you not have the 300ppi for print then a 72 or whatever for the site or whatever it is you're doing?

hi,
first... like johnathn mentioned... keep your orginal for the archives... i keep all my of graphics in bmp/psd/png ... and i make modified copies from them when i need to.... ie sending to a friend i convert to jpg, etc...

definitely changing the dpi 72-80 give you big decrease in files size ...... and that doesn't change the screen resolution of the image but make a huge difference in files... the dpi (except for scanning purposes) only effects printing quality....

and like i mentioned... going with a jpg format that will further reduce the file size... but this format you can end up with quality lost especially if you go with very high compression...

that was quite a bundle of infos i got from you all's reply. I really appreciate your help. saving as a jpg hs worked out loads for me. I saved it at maximum quality of 12. i think that should be enough to keep the file from losing most of its details.
thanks a lot for helping me out people.
