I need to do an art class to graduate college and so I decided to do a digital art thingy. I've been putting off taking art because I suck at it when it is painting or drawing or anything that takes much physical skill. I'm much more of a left brained person where I try to use logic and reason for everything and never really get creative. So our first project was a representationally abstract self portrait, so I used my left-brainedness as an entry point for that:

And next we were supposed to make a completely abstract piece which he described as re-purposing something, so I took screenshots and re-purposed photoshop:

The professor was really happy with my work. I just want to get more opinions so if you have one please share, thanks.

Well..
Considering techniques, what I see here tells me that you've got the potential. You've got skills to make a photoshop creation.
About the outcome, I recognize a typical faze in an Ps-designers career: your satisfied to quick... You should take yourself to an higher level by practicing and making more and more stuff...
My opinion on the last artwork: well, it shows practically 50% or more of the photoshop possibilities, but that's not the point for me. Less is more, and you will start to learn how to lend, how to pick colors, how to merge layers...
Considering the first one: it blends better than the second, and it's quite creative... But that's about it.
Stick around here, post more works, and you will see yourself improve in a matter of weeks, months.

Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to give me feedback.
To be honest I am not satisfied at all. I never feel finished, it always feels like something is missing or wrong, but I can sit there for ages and not decide what I need to do. I haven't used creativity much in my past but hopefully as I do this more, I'll get more used to it, and then be able to come up with what needs to be done faster than I quit of impatience.
Your work on here that I've seen is really cool, I intend to stick around and read as much as I can. Thanks again. |

Yeah I think the first image is a very creative and universally recognizable representation of left brainedness - I totally understood the meaning.
Your second piece is overly distorted to the point that it's meaning is lost. It reminds me a lot of DaDa which is, essentially, everything under the sun rammed into one. You are mixing nature with technology, cures with lines, dull desaturated colors with bright neon ones, clarity with blurry distortion, and easily recognizable symbols with ones that just don't seem to look like anything. It is a hodgepodge of things to say the least, but it certainly shows your grasp HOW to make things in photoshop.
I think if you learned more about design and design theory you may turn out to be pretty good at the art side of Photoshop. A primarily left brain individual could excel in design if they know what they are doing. I look at creativity like athletics. Some people are naturally athletic, give them a physical task and they can do it with ease regardless of what it is. Some people are naturally not athletic, but if they go the extra mile in practice they could end up beating the gifted person simply because they have worked hard enough. Some people recognize color schemes and contour patterns more easily by nature, but that is not to say that someone that doesn't can't develop the ability.
Even if you don't make a career out of Photoshop, or design in general, it is a nice skill to have so I would urge you to pursue it. |

Well seems like we have a new artist over here... Welcome btw.. ^^ .. DEVPPL is glad to see new people coming...
I'm glad that you can bear my critique, and that you don't feel satisfied :p....
Focus your design more on a fixed concept in stead of doing abstract things...
Try some tutorials, do some signatures / avatars... See what you like, determine your style and built up an image.. ^^...

I can see that both of your images fulfill the briefs set by your digital art professor, which is probably why he/she liked them so much. So from an academic point of view, well done.
From an artistic point of view, though, they're not that pleasant to look at. The colours in the first one just don't blend very well, and the second one is confusing and (like Isick said) distorted to the point that its meaning is lost.
I think that you did reasonably well given the restrictions that were imposed on you by an academic brief - I know how challenging it can be to 'create' when your creativity is being limited by so many factors. I would be interested to see some work that you have created 'just for fun'! |
