OK, i'll be going over what you need to do to create everything except the orb in this picture.


To make the orb use the Flame orb tutorial on DEVPPL HERE

OK. start with a simple gradient.


Use the Filter - Distort - Twirl. Put the twirl up to full. This will not be enough to get the desired effect, so do a ctrl+f and repeat the filter multiple times, until you are happy with the way it looks.



Now it gets a little tricky. Copy the layer, and on the top layer, do filter distor- polar cordinants. It should look like this.



Copy this layer and transform it so it is flipped on it's horizon, set the blending mode to lighten and merge down.



Set the mode on this merged layer to lighten as well and you should get an effect similar to below and above.
