OK.
I am building a webpage for a photography.
They want a black background.
They want the pictures to have a "shadow" (not sure what you call it) that would essentially make the picture look like it is floating above the page.
I do not know how to do this.
I am open to answers in Photoshop or (although I know this isnt the right Forum) in Dreamweaver.

Well I don't know how you would get your shadow to appear on the black background of the site, usually you would goto Layer>Layer Style>Drop Shadow in photoshop and that would give you a shadow all you need to do is save it as a .png but if it's on a black background your not going to see a shadow unless you like expanded the canvas of your image and control/cmd+click on the layer thumbnail of your image and on a new layer fill the selection with a dark gray then reposition the gray layer below the picture layer and move it down and to the left and either make the blank canvas black or save your image as a .png or .gif if the quality isn't important but I'm guessing since it's a photography site quality is important.

I think there is a CSS way of doing it that might involve a little more work but it would load the page quicker but I can't find a decent one straight away with google, but have a look it the photoshop method doesn't suit .

Dropping black on black doesn't have much of an effect although he could drop shadow and use a lighter shade of black. Or a lighter background.

I don't think ou can change the colour of the drop shadow, that's why I suggested doing it manually. With the gray square behind the image.

Yes, you can use any color for a drop shadow, as well as any blend mode. It's all right there in the drop shadow options menu. Just click on the black square to bring up the color picker.

Laugh well what happens when its a white background, you use a black glow. So... black background white glow.

Method: Draw a box in a new layer, right click the layer and go blending options then drop shadow, all the stuff you need is in there colour size etc.

Using outer-glow would not be as effective as using drop shadow

Rather than using a bright drop shadow, I would suggest making a separate layer with a bright low opacity outer glow and then add a dark outer glow and drop shadow to the main layer. Demo below.
