Metal Text Effect

1. Make a new image (ctrl+n), in this example i have used 477x250 pixels. Leave the other settings as deafult, click OK.

2. Press 'D' to reset the colors, now your primary color is black and your secondary color is white.

3. Click on the 'Horizontal Type Tool' click in your image, hold the mousebutton down and draw a box (where you want your text), release the mouse button. Type some text, in the this example I choosed DEVPPL. You should now have something like this:

4. We will now change the layerstyle of the text-layer. Click on Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options. A new window will now appear. You should now change alot of setting in this window. When you are going to change the settings for example 'Drop Shadow' don't click on the checkbox, click on the text 'Drop Shadow'. If you just click on the checkbox the default drop shadow settings will be activated, but if you click on the text, you will be able to edit the settings. And that is what we want.

5. Click on 'Drop Shadow' set Opacity to 50, set Distance to 0 and set Size to 10.

6. Click on 'Inner Shadow' set Distance to 0 and set Size to 7.

7. Click on 'Bevel and Emboss' set Size to 0 and set the Opacity of the Shadow Mode (the black color at the bottom of the window) to 0.

8. Click on 'Colot Overlay' click in the little colorbox, a new window will show up, select white as color (click on the upper left corner), click on OK. Set Opacity to 25.

9. Click on 'Gradient Overlay' set Opacity to 50.

10. Click on 'Stroke' set Size to 1 and click in the colorbox and choose black color, OK, OK

11. You should now have something like this:

I changed the backgound and here is my final result:

what does it look like then? =)

Actually Im not very pleased with the effect niether, but it made for th beginner. If you read the text you will se that every thing is explained in detail. Maybe I will make a follow-up on this one to add some cracks and rust maybe.

I think it's good. You explain alot in every step making me (the photoshop noob) understand what I'm doing. In the other tutorials I was just following blind orders, if you know what I mean. Laughing

It does look like some kind of metalish gradient, making the text look more metalish as well. So I think Mr Webmaster Man is correct Smile Besides, a follow up with cracks and rust would be sweet idea for someone wanting to add more to their text than just this metalish effect.

Nice work Razz!

I agree with Kotik. You didnt "forget" to include information that was relevant to the tut. Some tuts dont include colors or what not...how is the noob supposed to know if it looks right or not? The newb can learn more this way...or at least I can. Very Happy

that loks really cool, i also found that if you follow your tutorial but put a white stokeline. Then duplicate the layer, rotate the canvas 90ccw* and use the wind tool on the wind setting facing left. Then turn the canvas back to normal, it looks like this. Soz for my bad explanation im a complete newb on photoshop.

I think that you need to do it on a new canvas, then drag it into your previous work
