select the picture/object
add a gradient overlay
change the gradient
in the "gradient editor" option, click the tab on the top that is on the left
change the opacity to 0
change the angle of the gradient
mess around untill you get the effect you want/need |

Not sure where the "gradient editor" is - can't follow your directions
Do I create a new layer for the gradient? If not, when I choose opacity to 0 I lose the entire picture.

I wish I could show you with screenshots, but I can't upload anything at the moment.
The "gradient editor" is the different settings you ahve for the Gradient Tool, and it is located right under the "File", "Edit" etc. buttons. << I THINK! |

Thanks for trying!
Ok, found the gradient editor by clicking the sample on the gradient toolbar. However, it does not allow me to change the opacity here!

The thingy I explained does allow you to change the opacity. |

Thanks, Phate.
I got it to work....but I think I am explaining what I want to do incorrectly. I want the actual image to be transparent on the edge and fade to regular opacity.
Does that make more sense?

The object you want to do this effect has to be on a separate layer.
1. Create a layer mask on the layer Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal all.
2. Now add a 'transparent to black' gradient while the Mask is selected. (black will become the transparent area.)
Do this according to your needs. This is how you do it.
Edit: Pretty much what phate said. I'm doing the same thing in a different way. |

Or juat use your marquee tool (m) and set feather to 35 or something, select the side you want to get rid of and press delete a few times or change feather until the effect you want
