Hope someone clever can help me please!
I have a TIFF file that I open with PS and it opens with a foreground layer that is white and the object is red.
When I remove the layer visibility from the foreground the layer, the white back(fore?)ground is not visible and the red object remains. I put back the layer visibility.
Upon saving to web, the image is saved as a white square and the red image is lost.
Has anyone any guidance please on how I can save the red image?
Thanks. |

It doesn't need to be a TIFF extension but the original (ie source) and only copy I have is a TIFF file.
I am opening it in PS to save it as, say, a JPEG to reduce its size. Hence my use of Save for Web.

i think that what you need to do is:
open the TIFF
select all
copy (or cut)
open new
paste
save for web |

Thanks for the attempt - but after paste I get just a white background. No red image.
Any other ideas please? |

Do you have to save for web? do what phate said, only put the red image thing on top and create a new later transparent or white under it and then Layer-> Flaten Image then slice it , save for web
if thats not it post the file up here ill do it for you some other way |

Hi Greg
I don't know how to post the file! In any case it is 17MB size. I'm grateful for your offer to do it for me.
The problem seems to be that the red image is not showing on the layer (on any layer), so I can't get to the red image to work on it. When opening the file, there is only a single layer, a 'foreground' layer that is plain white. It's as if the red image does not exist to PS.
Many thanks, Frank |

Thanks for trying and the 'good luck' wishes Greg.
Any other suggestions gratefully received!
BTW, for future use, how does one post a file (or screenshot for that matter) to the forum?

Well this is a bad suggestion, and i don't suggest any one do this, but it is a simple fix for your problem.. If the red image you are trying to extract is just a small clip art, i would suggest this:
Simple Version:
take a screenshot of the red thing and paste it into the document.
Instructions:
1. open file with the red clip in it so it is being viewed.
2. press F to make the image full screen.
3.Zoom in so the image fills the screen.
4.Hit print screen.
5. open new document, edit paste, or ctrl+V.
6. Use lasso, quick mask or other selection tecniques to select the red clip art, press ctrl+J to copy it to a new layer.
7. Drag that new layer (with just the red selected) to the document you are trying to insert it on.
This may not be the solution your looking for, but from what you told us is your problem, this will work.
Let us know how it goes.

Many thanks Phate. That approach worked just fine and I am very grateful for your help.
As a newcomer to Photoshop, may I make a comment and invite views please?
On the morning when Mr Adobe sat down to write Photoshop, I would have expected the first thing for him to think of is that users would want to seperate objects from their backgrounds!
With this thread and another elsewhere on this forum, I have found that this ostensibly most basic of operations is fraught with fiddle, kluge and difficulty.
Am I just demonstrating my lack of understanding of the product or is it a difficult, non intuitive application to use? |
