See this is my issue. its a weird thing for me and i cant figure out what is going on. I draw a rectangle and then i highlight the rectangle and choose rounded rectangle and subtract from layer, it works perfect and cuts out a rounded rectangle portion of the original rectangle. This is what i want.

But it seems if i leave that original rectangle alone and start creating another layer and come back to the original rectangle again later and try to cut a rounded rectangle portion out of it, the add/subtract buttons are not selectable anymore.

So basically if i think i have everything right, but later on find i need to make a cut from a shape this way, i cant do it so im forced to do everything in one shot and cross my fingers that i dont need to make any changes in the future.

Okay, there's another way of subtracting, called deleting.
Create a new file.
Create a new layer "rectangle".
Draw an rectangle in this layer either with the marque tool/fill or the shape tool.
Create a new layer "subtract".
Draw an rectangle with rounded edges with the shape tool on top of the rectangle. Where this shape covers is the part that will be removed from the previous rectangle.
Ctrl + click the "subtract" layer to make a selection of the shape.
Click the "rectangle" layer once to make it your working layer (it will be marqued in blue on the layer palette).
Hit "Delete".
Now either hide the "subtract" layer or delete it.

There you go.
