Anchor Point Handle / Bezier Point Handle PROBLEM

Hello All

Getting a weird problem in Illustrator. I am no longer able to work with the anchor point handles on any shapes. They appear when i drag the actual anchor point but disappear when I release it and there is no way to make them appear individually or in groups, in order to work with them. A new document, it works as it should. Any thoughts? I tried toggling the show and hide handles buttons but that has no effect.

I worked around it by copying the shape i needed to work on into a new blank document, making my changes, and then pasting it back.
