Blending options help.

I am totally new to photoshop. I am playing around with layers. I made the background with no problems. Just a solid color and beveled edge. Now I made a second layer. I used the custom shape tool and added a butterfly. Now I am trying to use my blending options on the butterfly and I can't do anything with it. I right clicked on shape one and go to blending options and when I click on the different options nothing happens. The person who showed me a brief overview of all this made it look simple and now I can't do this. What am I doing wrong?
