i think you bet option is to back everything on your computer up on dvds and then format you computer and reinstall windows

I really dont think you will find a programme for what you need like i say My Pictures is just a folder and only you can download images from any website and it up to you what progamme opens them and what folder there saved in.
Thanks Raven. I fear a clean install because it could cause many other complications.

I created a new folder in 'My Documents' but am unable to name it without some huge operation described in a Vista faq which includes altering the registry. Even if I could rename it I would not know how to make it the default for 'My Pictures.'
The problem with Vista is that it seems to be very unuser friendly to people who know zilch about PCs and the descriptions I had on how to fix the problem from the Vista forum are just way above my head and bear no resemblence to the version of Vista I have.

sara why do you need a default folder in my documants you can save images to any file with any name anywhere on your computer programmes open my pictures just because its the default that does not meen you have to use it

Raven thanks for all your kind help which is much appreciated. Someone just came in and sorted the problem out for me and now I have a new 'My Pictures' file.
