Can't select+modify, and can't delete

Instead of creating separate threads I decided to go for a twofer:

1. Can someone explain why when I select an image (ctrl+a) I can't choose any Select-Modify options other than "Border"? I distinctively remember being able to do this before. My only workaround has been to use the marquee tool and use the feather option (to round off the corners):

2. The other issue arises when I try to cut the corners of the image, I select the entire image using a 10px feather, select inverse, and when I hit "delete" this is what happens, it just fades around the edges. The same thing happens if I try to Edit-Fill, and it also happens if I use the eraser tool.


Thank you in advance for any help you can offer, I'm about to go out of my mind trying to figure this out!

1Don't worry, it's not you, for some reason that's all you can do when you select all. Under that same menu have u tried 'transform selection'? It works just like 'free transform', so u can type in exact measurements if need be.

2) when you add feathering to your selection that's what happens, it gives you a fading effect on your selection. If you want to make a selection with rounded corners use the rounded rectangle tool(shape tool). Make it the size you want and with the pen, shape, or direct select tool active, right click the shape the 'make selection'. Then you will have a rounded corner selection with no feathering around it.
