Creating A Bandana Pattern(Need Help!!!!)

I hope I didn't post in the wrong section but...

Hi, I'm a "NEWBIE" when it comes to photoshop and other types of editing. But I recently made a sig which has "504" in White and then it fades into blue as you see here..


Now.... when I made this pic, I originally wanted the blue part to be filled in with this bandana.

so, my question is, how do I create a bandana texture so that the BLUE in the "~5.0.4.~ is replaced with the banana texture? ???

Well.. erm..
If you make a texture pattern by saving an area of this bandana (this means you'd be able to use it as a brush, in gradients and so on) I don't think you'll be able to fill only the blue, both white and blue would be filled with the pattern.

Now, what I reccomend trying for starters would be place your texture over 5.0.4 in a seperate layer.
> ctrl + click the layer with 5.0.4 (if you have it in a seperate layer).
> Hit ctrl + i and hit delete
> Change the opacity or blending mode (or both)
> Take out your erraser, set hardness to 0 and opacity to 30.
> Brush over where you don't want pattern and leave it in the blue

Sorry that I can't explain it more, but I gotta go now, try this for now, I'll be back later and see if I can explain it a bit better if you don't get my thinking.

Yeah making a pattern out of it would be good.

Create a layer above you text layer then fill that layer with the bandana pattern.

Alt + Click on the line between the text layer (504 text) and the layer with the bandana pattern.

What will happen is the 504 will all be in the bandana pattern

You then add a layer mask to the bandana layer and use a black to white gradient on the layer mask and you're done!


Now I know this will be hard to follow so when I get home I can go into more detail with images to illustrate if you like

Alright, I have the 504 filled in with the bandana texture. But I'm a little confused on how to get it to fade to white. How do create a "layer mask"?

Oh, I took a different approach.

What I did was save the bandana jpg as a patter, then I filled it in the text.
