Creating a map in Photoshop

Postby vegetableman on Tue Jul 24, 2007 9:16 am

Hi everyone...brand new so be gentle!...

I'm a relative novice with Photoshop, in fact I'm still running CS (upgrading very soon!).

A colleague of mine has asked me to undertake a project whereby I need to create a handful of discrete maps of areas of London (eg Soho), to illustrate the whereabouts of certain businesses. My initial approach was to scan relevant pages of the A-Z into Photoshop and somehow use the Magic Wand/Paths/Layers to remove all detail from the maps but create a 'tracing' of the road layouts and building positions. I could then use the Text tool to retype relevant road names in a sexy font and add symbols to represent the aforementioned businesses. Is this the way to go? Is there a more straighforward way to proceed? (I'm confusing myself the more I write!...)

Can anyone please help??? I'm sure this is very basic stuff for many of you, so please forgive my ignorance.

The main concerns are that the final map is of print quality ie 300ppi, looks professional, and doesn't get anyone sued by the creators of the A-Z! :)

Hope someone can advise...many thanks.

Adobe Illustrator is the answer. Just scan the map in photoshop then place it in illustrator and trace everthing that you want to trace.

You may be best off looking for a digital map (I am sure there will be a few of london!) - if you can find one in .eps, .ai, .pdf format it would be best... although even if all you can find is a high res .jpg then you will be going in the right direction.

Thanks kyockxzsnt. A friend has Illustrator...I'll grab it off him and have a go.

Thanks also Disjuku, noted your suggestions. Just try google you think?

Cheers
