Creating a transparent circle image

Hi, Don't mean to sound thick, but how the hell do you create a transparent circle on a white background in Photoshop 7. I know how to create a white background and draw a circle with the crop tool, but how do I make the actual circle transparent. Hope someone can help

Cheers. Am stumped with this one......don't know how to do it.

1) Make a new document, choose a background type of transparent
2) choose white as your primary color (or colour if you know proper english )
3) choose the fill tool
4) click inside the transparent area
5) Choose the circle selection tool
6) make a circle
7) click the delete button
Congrats! you now have a transparent area that looks like a circle!
