Custom shape tool question

I dun understand what this button for under Custom shape tool:

"Set to change properties of target layer; clear to change properties of new layer"

hmm... after quite a bit of toggling it on and off I have come to the conclusion that it does absolutely nothing! lol

obviously it's gotta do something but I didn’t see anything change at all while making shapes

I am actually now curious about this, even though I have never needed it
