SEO and SEM are the two common terms used by the webmasters. Sometimes it seems like there two terms are used almost interchangeably, but that is not, there is a big difference in their meanings and techniques. SEO which refers to anything you do on your website to make it more users as well as friendly. Whereas SEM stands for search engine marketing, it works as an umbrella which refers to anything you do to get your page ranked high on the search engine from SEO services to requesting back links to URL submissions at engines.
It's very important to know the difference between both the services while looking for them. If a company offers SEO or SEM service package then do not hesitate to ask the details. Do not hand over any money in advance until you know properly because some companies may mean nothing more than submitting website's URL at most popular search engines, you can do that yourself also. There is a list of engines at which the webmaster need to submit your website's URL. And keyword optimization is also very important; do not forget to include META and ALT tags.
