different color on each layer

Postby birdartist on Thu Apr 12, 2007 3:58 am

New forum member, first post. I would like to know if there is a way to break down an image by color and place each color on a separate layer. I am not talking about color separation as in regular printing. What I have done is scanned one of my paintings, applied the Artistic/cutout filter at 8 levels. I would now like to isolate each of these levels (colors) to a separate layer, print that layer and use it as a template to carve a block for a woodcut. I am a bit of a novice when it comes to much of the power of Photoshop but I bet if this is possible, someone here can tell me how.

Thank you

Don

Try Select> Color Range. You might have to play with the fuzziness slider a bit to get what you want. Basically, the more fuzziness you add, the more 'off' the color can be and still be selected.

Medley,
Thanks for the response, it looks like it is not going to be as easy as I thought. I may be able to use this proceedure but early attempts are not producing the expected results. I got the same advice in another forum as well so most likely this is the closest I will come.

If you want to post the image, I'll be happy to look at it and see if I have any other ideas.

Thanks Medley,
It appears the only way to post an image is to have it uploaded some place. I have not yet done that and most forums I use I can directly up load from my computer so I will have to pursue an option for this. Am looking at Flickr so I may be able to post it shortly.
