Difficult cutout for a noob

Postby percyrules on Wed Mar 21, 2007 3:20 am

Basically I want to replace the orange background with white. I cant reshoot, photoshop is the only option right now. I used a magic wand to delete the orange, but there's a pesky orange outline remaining along the mannequin. Anyone know of a better way?

Here is the before and after

You did well as far as you went. Even a precise mask made from a color channel and enhanced with the Calculations command left the same outline.

I added two more steps. First, I gave the manequin an inner glow, color white, size 5 pixels. This eliminated a lot of the outline around the outside of the mannequin, but still left the outline on the inner arms and shirt.

Next, since the mannequin is largely colorless, I desaturated the whole image (Image> Adjustments> Desaturate) This had the effect of making the orange grey, and blending it into the arms/shirt.

You could skip the first step, but it leaves a darker outline around the mannequin that looks jagged due to the high contrast with the background.

Anyway, here's the final image I came up with:

Hope this helps.

Medley oks good the way you did it, but do u think you could possibly even make it better by using the pen tool and then doing inverse selection or w/e then deleting. Just an idea? I guess that would kinda be like making the makiken a render

I understand what you're saying, but I don't think it would work well in this case. The problem with the outline is that the color has 'bled' into the outline of the mannequin. Deleting the color would delete part of the mannequin. Therefore, blending the color into the mannequin's outline becomes the better choice.

Thanks for keeping me on my toes though. I'm always willing to look at a problem from a fresh perspective.
