Dimensions of a CD Label

Postby Ainz on Fri Aug 03, 2007 7:00 am

I've volunteered to make a CD cover for one of my friends wedding CD. (they are making a mixed CD for all of their wedding guests) They only want me to make a design for the actual CD. Not the insert or back. Just the actual sticker that will go on the Disc itself.

My problem is that I dont know the best way to do this. I figured i could just find the dimensions of a disc, mimick the disc by drawing circles and then working within those circles. Has anyone done this before? I'd love it if there were a template that i can use but I cant find one.

any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I'd do that :D
Make a new file (a CD is 12 CM in diameter, so 12x12 will do fine with a transparrent background). Then with the circle shape tool (set to fill pixels, color doesn't really matter) draw a perfect circle (you can use "fixed size" on the file tray) and you have your base layer/template for the CD.
Now either use ctrl + click the base layer to keep within the boundaries or use ctrl + click and then ctrl + i (invert) Delete to remove anything outside the boundaires..
That should work.

I actually have a CD maker program that gives me the dimensions. I will dig that up and forward it on to you, will edit when found.

EDIT:
Ok I found it, but it wouldn't give me the dimensions so I did the next best thing...

... I printed it to a PDF (which can be opened in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop) which you can then use to align your image with.
You can download the PDF here:

Just to give credit where credit is due, the program is called Nero and is a beauty.

A must have for any small time Cd writer. The CD Labeler is just a plus.

I made one a while back, I just searched google for like CD + Actual Size, then you can just open it in ps and wand it out and it works fine. Just an FYI when you do finally print and cut it out, it may be a bit bigger than the cd for some reason, so don't make anything important right on the edges of the picture. Here is the size I used if you want, just wand the outside and middle

ignore the text, just a silly cd cover i made!

You can buy CD labels, which you can print on. They have sticky on the back. An easy way is to scan a CD with a white piece of paper. Then make 2 circles in Photoshop. Make the label a bit smaller than the CD, makes it look neat.

If you want design ideas, check out iTunes music store or a CD shop.
