.eps vs .ai saving for InDesign CS2

.eps vs .ai saving for InDesign CS2

Postby romeovb on Thu May 03, 2007 12:25 am

Hey there everyone!

I need some confirmation on whether it is best to save an Illustrator file (cs2) as an .eps or a .ai for InDesign (cs2). I have heard a couple of conflicting opinions but prett much want a solid answer.

Please help! Thanks.

I prefer AI format for a few reasons. AI is the default selection when you save a new illustrator drawing, so it's quicker. I have also found that large AI files save faster and handle some fonts better. There are a few of my favorite fonts that prevent a file from being saved as an EPS. I also believe that Adobe files and products always work their best when used within other adobe programs and files, and AI is a native adobe file format. I used to use Quark and had to save all my work as EPS, but now that I use InDesign I save everything as AI. There may be not much of an actual difference between using the two, but AI is definitely easier. The only drawback is that it can only be opened in illustrator.

Thanks. since posting I have pretty much saved all illustrator files as .ai
Previously with fonts I would save a font file and an outline file to avid problems, but it just threw in an extra step. Which would be a hassle if client wished to make a change.

Thanks again!
