faded/worn halftone effect, HELP!

Postby str8filthy on Tue Apr 26, 2011 4:22 am

How would I achieve the same faded/worn halftone effect as the one the attached image? (particularly on the "PARKWAY" lettering)
I've been trying to figure this out myself for a while now,
Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

thanks so much,
steve

hi,
now i am not that experienced but here my thoughts... now i have been looking at this picture for days....lol... trying to analyze how they did things... that really heard...
1. now as far as that red background.., they didn't use half tone effect, .. I think what they did there was after they got there basic red and black streaks they then applied a cloth texture... maybe burlap or canvas or what ever .... that what i see and then since it appears that texture sort of fades in and out... they maybe applied a mask and then applied a cloud effect to the mask...!!!
note: on some of the real dark areas maybe they used the D&B tool not sure..

2. on the parkway itself....mmm.... i tried the half tone effect and i could get the squares small enough or blurry enough to match that effect... maybe my ps version not good enough.. what ever... so what i came with...
a. they mayve used a hafltone brush!! there tutorial on making one if you don't have one avail.....
b. otherwise... after i made the text..... i selected text and then add a mask and on the maske.... in this case i used filter gallery>grain effect .... and applied that to the mask!!!!!!
now there several type of grain effects there you may want to cycle thru them... to see which one you like ... a tip... now this works with my ps version... but click the grain type where it hilighted and then hit the up and down arrow it will sequence thru the grain type.. smiling... i like that short cut... works on windws where you have choices like blending modes etc....

again you can make your own brush for the effect yo want... ... and then apply that to the mask!!!

now overall since there a lot of maybe going back forth repeating things you may want to make smartobjects out of some of the layers....

anyway i hope that helps you.... i don't if that the way the guy did it.. but that how i would do it. with my limited experience.. there probably better ways....
