hi,
i'll probably get a little long winded so I apologize now smiling......
first keep in mind what noir is about -- dark, brooding and mysterious to enphasize, in my opinion, darker side... think of o your film noir movies and posters.. how they use brightness and contrast and shading to enphsize drama
as far as photoshop.... keep in mind there alot of different procedurees/techniques to get the same results and which way will depend on the image itself....
bascially here with that image... they converted it to a black white then in the skinareas they added a touch a grey and then they painted in the red and the black shading.... that way i looked at it....
now how to get there... basic work flow
like i said different ways and this is one way... and your version of ps may have a couple of features that i don't have that can work also....
1. take your image..... and dup it....
2. then desaturate it.....
note: you can go straight to using threshold....
3. optional you may want to do a curve or level to enphasize the black and white
note: newer versionof ps has a black and white adjustment feature...
4. you can also go into your brightness and contrast control to enphsize the black and white ......
5. now the image i was working with not quite to my liking so i went to my sketch filters... there several there that can work but it depends on the image but the stamp tool ended up making things better with the image i used..
for those red lips...created a lyaer, all they did there was select the lips and paint red and for the cigerrte same thing painted red...
now the white areas.. is not pure white possibly they just filled it in with a very soft llight grey .... then they painted in the shadows... with a black soft edge brush ....
now they probably made several dup layers and used blank layers for a lot of the painting they did just in case they need to go back this way they don't have to start all over from the beginning... smiling......
now i went looking for some tutorials that are related....
this is a simple and basic tutorial
