Well, I just did the tutorial and in step nine I ended up about like you did. So, instead of changing the width to 1000%, I just pulled the center handles of the bounding box out by hand, until I got something I liked. Reducing the size of your image (say 25% for example) within a large editing window will allow you to see the bounding box and it's handles more easily. Also, keep in mind that the entire mist layer can be moved around as desired.
The author did say that we may have to tweak the Mist layer a little to get the most realistic look. In all probability, the final result of that tutorial will be a little different for each of us and some minor tweaking will be required. I think part of the reason for that might be due to step six (Render>Clouds). After all, each time that filter is used the cloud effect turns out differently. Anyway, try using a percentage less than 1000 or maneuver the bounding box by hand as I did. Hopefully, one of those will be helpful.
