Gradient Tool Problem

I get the error message "Could not use the gradient tool because the content of the layer is not directly editable" when I try to use the gradient tool after creating a circle. I am following the tutorial at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=tW5LKadR4iM

are you creating a circle using shape tool? if yes then rasterize the layer first ..

Layer> Rasterize> layer

or you can apply a gradient overlay...

Layer> layer style> Gradient Overlay..

Hope this will work... otherwise a screen cap will be very helpful for me to understand...
