Highlight text as a text effect?

I've been trying to find a way of highlighting text in Illustrator. I basically want the same effect you get when you select and drag the type tool over a bit of text. The background of the text is black and the text colour inverts. I don't know how to get this effect easily without just making loads of boxes thats going to take ages. Please help.

any thing? If not in illustrator how about InDesign?
