How do you get this effect with night pictures?

Postby malchick79 on Tue Apr 24, 2007 10:16 am

Hi all

Am a club photographer and am looking to find some good after effects in photoshop to make people's faces and appearances look flawless and kind of powdery.

Like this:

in fact, anything on the dirtydirtydancing site. I know that the photographer keeps his post production techniques closely guarded and don't want to ri[p him off but does anyone have any tips on making people's faces look this way? Or at least to avoid the blotches and spots that normally come out when using high flash in a dark club?

many thanks

As far as I know these effects are a result of various combinations of filters and layer blend effects. Having them explained on a board like this without a tutorial might be a bit tough. Maybe a few of my fellow members here have some tutorial link at hand that can help you achieve this effect.

thanks v much Kotik

Any help / info you have would be great - i'm fairly well versed with PS 7 so should understand what you impart.

I'm not sure whether they are massively or lengthily manipulated images since the turnover time between taking the images and posting them on the site is incredibly quick?

I see that the site has contact page.
Talk to the owner he might be nice enough to tell you how he did it.

lol yeah i think he might be averse to spilling his beans so readily

besides, i don't want to merely regurgitate what he's done, am just wondering roughly which areas one would look to post-process an image to get something like this effect.

thanks for the reply though!

He has probally made a script. Most professional photographers use theese to make quick enchants of their photos. A script can be an automatic line of filters that run when you use a script for example.
Of course one can do various touch ups (like skin-correction etc.), but with loads of pictures it takes time.
So my guess is he is using a script for all of those pictures to give it a quick touch-up.
unfortunately I do not now much about theese kind of things..

Hi Excruciating,
Thanks for the reply. That sounds like it might be the case.

Any idea what kind of filters they might be anyone? And how would one go about touching up an image for skin-correction in this vein?

Here is what I did to achieve a likewise effect. Please not that I did not spend alot of time and effort into this so its just a mere 5 minute attempt but you might get the idea what he 'might' have done.

I took a picture. Made a duplicate of it, and set the blending mode to Overlay. I added a Smart blur and adjusted 'Highlight/shadow' 'Hue/Saturation' and 'Brightness and Contrast'. Did some minor tweaking in the Curves and Levels of the image and got an almost duplicate effect of the desired effect.

The results may vary depending on light sources etc.

Edit: For further perfection in dark environments I suppose you can play around with masked filters.
