How real does this picture look?

Postby Grawburg on Sun Jul 15, 2007 5:41 pm

So I have combined a picture of a guy playing the guitar with a background of the harbor. The picture looks pretty good, but there's just something I can't put my finger on that makes it a little fake looking.

Anyone else see this or is it just me cause I know what the originals look like?

looks good, It may be a lighting problem, but I don't see any major issues.

The only thing that I can see is that, behind the guy and the rock to the right the background has the same ammount of blur to it which seems a bit wierd (but not unlikely).
Shadows looks fine.. Especially because you can't see the sun :P

If I didn't know it was photoshopped I would not have noticed anything i think.

I'm only concerned with the edges of the hair (too sharp). The cropping is quite obvious.

The image seems to be well cut-out. The hair does look a bit too close-cut, but hair is always a problem in that process.

The main thing that catches my attention is the focus of the background... it doesn't look quite right - either needs to be more-blurred or less-blurred... probably more I think, as the subject in focus is quite close to the camera. Possibly if you could see some of the rock sticking up above his arm it would help give it perspective?

I finally figured out what it was that bothered me about this pic. It's the highlight on the rock underneath the guitarman's arm.

The light on the guitarman himself indicates a light source off the right side of the picture, but the highlight on the rock suggests a light source from the left- especially since the right side of the rock is in shadow.

I think if you were to select the highlight on the rock and darken it some, it would be an improvement.

I would say the biggest thing is the blurring of the background. While I think the farthest part of the sea is of a good blur, the water should get increasingly sharper the closer it is to the camera. There is to consistent a blur from the shallows to the deep water which makes the eye look twice.

However, on first glance it looks real enough where as someone who is not experienced in photoshop or photography would not be able to notice.
