How to continue with illustrator-file

Hey!
I'm new on this forum, I'm also new in using Adobe programs...
I made a map of our village in Photoshop. When it was ready, I opened it in Illustrator and made some modifications with this program.
Afterwards, when I opened the file again in Photoshop, none of my modifications made in Illustrator were visible. However they should be there, because, when I opened again the file in Illustrator everything was still there....
Why is this so? Did I forget something when saving the file in Illustrator? Why are the modifications not visible in Photoshop?
