Yes I am a photoshop newbie, so don't get to technical with me
I'm trying to create a PNG for a online t-shirt thing. I need to put a completely white logo on a black t-shirt.
But if I just upload a white logo with black background (jpg) I get a shirt with a black square around the logo.
The site (the t-shirt thing) supports PNG, so how do i create a PNG so the t-shirt only gets the logo and not any color around it?
I hope this makes sense to any of you. I only know very basic stuff, but I learn pretty quick (i think).
So far what I've done is,
I used the lasso tool to get the logo in to a new project. Now there is 2 layers, background and the actual picture. What do I do? |

hi,
let me see if can give you some ideas....
first... keep in mind there a ton of tutorial out there , there some good tutorials here at devppl..... i find one of my best search phrases is.. for example
"photoshop tutorial selecting objects" or "photoshop tutorial mapping" ,,,, will get access to a lot of training....
now with yours.... there a lot of different ways to go about eliminating that black...!! and when you do you should see another layer developed that has checkerboard pattern that the traspancny part!!!
1. if it a nice even black color you can use your magic wand... just click on the black area, and that should select (you'll see dancing ants..smile) and then you can just hit the del key and you should see all the transparent areas.
2. yo can also use one of the lasso tools, i like the magnetic lasso to select what you want or don't want..!! again select that black and hit delete....
3. you can also use one of the eraser tools.. again i like the magic eraser.. in this case just click the back area and it automatically and you'll see that checkerboard patter (transparency......
keep in mind sometimes you have to play with the settings there at the top for a specific tool to get the best results.....
once you have delete those area you don't want and have in it place the checkerboard pattern... then your ready to save as a png and it will retain the transparency...!
there other meathod but of these will work well for you
one final thought..... although many programs will accept transparent png..... there a couple out there that won't recognize the transparency channel hence sometime you have to use gif...

I wont get technical with you, but your best option is to use a rather advanced technique. JerryB's methods are simple and work well, but can take a long time to complete well if you have a complicated image. For the best and fastest results you should do the following:
Note, this will only work with Black and White images!
1) Select your whole image (ctrl + a) - this should be the black and white image layer
2) Cut it (ctrl + x)
3) Open quick mask mode* (press Q)
4) Paste your image (ctrl + v)
5) exit quick mask mode (press Q)
6) Using the paint bucket fill the new selection with white
7) Now save as a PNG.
*Quick Mask Mode uses black and white values to create a selection - the more white the more solid the selection, the more black the more transparent the slection. It gives you the opportunity to make more advanced selections without having to rely on the standard selection tools.
In your case we wanted to remove all black while converting grey pixels into respectively transparent White pixels which can not be done by using the lasso tool. Quick Mask Mode gave us that ability because it is designed to make semi transparent selections based on the intensity of the grey.
I know you said not to get technical, but I figured I'd explain WHY it works. |
