How to get space aon the canvas around my photo

I know it must be a simple thing, but how do I get photoshop to open my photos with a blank space around the photo ?

see attachment after that you will see the sizes, change to bigger than original say .but first remove background layer if it has on. save as .gif or .png

Thanks for the reply. I don't think that keeps the settings does it ? Next photo you open up goes back to the original settings. I want every photo .... and every "New" canvas I open to come up automatically with space around it (like the right hand image in the attached screenshot).
