How to smooth paint brush?

Postby quick5pnt0 on Tue Jul 03, 2007 9:22 pm

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but can anyone help me resolve this problem?

In PS7 if I try to paint on a somewhat large (2000x2000 pixel) canvas with a large paint brush (600+) I get a very jagged edge to the paint brush. I've tried everything from trying to raise and lower the resolution of the image, to trying different brushes, and even using different blurs. Nothing helps. Is there any way to get a very smooth edge when I use the paint brush.

Here's an example image (cropped) to show you what I mean by "jagged edge"

Thanks for the reply. The brush hardness is already set at 0%.

I was just going to suggest that :D

Why not try to blur the image after you brush it

what resolution is your cavas at (min/max that you have tried)? Also - are you using a tablet, or a mouse? Do you notice the jagged edge in photoshop, or only when it is saved?

Thanks. :)

I've tried adding blur but it just doesn't get rid of it. Even after blurring it multiple times the jagged edges are still there.

Well I've been using a 2000 x 2000 pixel canvas. I've tried setting the resolution at 72, 300, 600, and 1000.

Right now I'm using a mouse, although I do have a tablet that I can try out if you think it would make a difference (haven't used it in some time because I misplaced the drivers/software)

The jagged edges are there both in photoshop and after I save it.

Thanks again for the replies!

A couple things to check in the brushes pallette (not sure how closely 7.0 mirrors CS2 here, so it may be a little different on yours):
in brush tip shape, what is spacing set to (I find that 15-25% gives good smooth edges in mine)?
Do you have 'smoothing' checked??
Make sure none of the other effects are checked?

Worse case scenario you can always try clearing out the preferences file. :)
