I'm new with a basic question...

Postby dmbrem99 on Tue Dec 09, 2008 9:23 pm

I want to take a color photo and turn it into a grayscale... however, I want to keep only the tie, I'm wearing, the original color.

Can someone tell me how to perform this action? I am using Photoshop CS2 Version 9.0. You can email me at dmbrem99@gmail.com to take this off the forums.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers, Jake.

I usually make the image grayscale then turn it back to RGB then paint over the area I want coloured with the history brush.

I would think you could select the area around the tie and then make an inverse selection. Once you have the inverted selection, I would then turn the highlighted area into Grayscale.

There are practically unlimited amount of ways to do this, both of the above are valid ways of doing it. You could also use two layers, Desaturate the back layer and erase what you don't need on the top layer.

Just want to add here that for preserving document editing capabilities, it's a good habit imo to keep it in layers, like dflynn said.

If we're really into habits, I'd perhaps use a Layer Mask instead of erasing, as this will preserve file history even better.

But if you're not planning to become an advanced ps user, any of the above will do the trick :)

I would:

-Use the polygonal lasso tool to select the tie.
-Shift+ctrl+i to inverse selection
-ctlr+U (Hue/Saturation window)
-Turn tha saturation down to your liking

I've used this technique before and the picture came out great.
