importing picture to trace around

hello! . i have just started learning to use illustrator (today) . and i wish to trace around a picture but when i go to file - place and select a picture i am told there is insufficient memory to complete the opperation. I have tried this with different pictures and different canvas sizes. Does anyone know how i can get a background picture so i can draw round it?

what kind of image are you trying to place? format, file size, etc.

just tried again and it seems to be working now lol.


i think the machine i was using last time had a really low memory limit on some applications or something like that.
