Lost psd file

I recently modified an image with CS3. saved it as usual, but when I tried to open it today, photoshop says it "cannot open it as it is not the right kind of document." Can anyone tell me how to open it? Also, I would appreciate knowing why this happened.

Try opening with IrfanView or simillar program.

Many thanks for your suggestion. I tried it but unfortunately it didn't work. I think I now know what caused the problem. When I saved it I put a full stop as part of the file name. I'll know in future.
