Magic Lasso Problems

I am just starting with Photoshop. I am able to use the magic lasso to select the item on the screen without any problems. However, when I go to copy my selection and paste it one a digital background, all I get is an outline of the image. For the life of me I can't figure out what is going wrong. I have tried to paste it onto a .jpg and .tif file so I don't think that is the problem. I have gotten it to work in the past but I don't know what I am doing differently. Now, it seems that this happens all the time. HELP!!!

By magic lasso, i'm assuming you mean magnetic lasso? If so check the feather setting up at the top of your screen. Make sure it is set at 0px.
