Making a layer transparent.

Postby Gaston on Sun Jun 24, 2007 11:59 pm

Hey, I'm in the process of creating some stuff. Now, I got a bunch of layers all set up for different stuff. I am however wondering how I can set a transparacy level for a layer. You know so you will see the backgroun and layers behind it "through" it so to speak. The brightest colour would be the most transparant one, and the darkest color would be the least transparant one. Anyone know how I can do this?

You can play with opacity settings of a layer for transperency...

opacity 100%= 100% opaque or fully visitle
Opacity 0%= 100% Transparent or not visible

If you have an image and you want the brightest color to be most transparent and the darkest color to be least transparent it sounds like all you have to do is set the blend mode of that layer to either "Multiply" or "Darken".

It does exactly what you described, the brighter the color the more transparent, the darker the color the more opaque.

you could also use a greyscale version of the image (tweaked with levels or curves) as a layer mask.... but yeah, setting the blend mode would be easier (though you dont get as much control)
