MSN links

I found these two things which you can create a link to and you can add contacts to your msn. "msnim:add?contact=smarterchild@hotmail.com", there is also "msnim:chat?contact=smarterchild@hotmail.com" which starts a convo. I was just wondering how do these work?? By the way it dosnt work in firefox.

I just think they're cool because in stead of saying "Add me: smarterchild@hotmail.com" you can have somthing like:

Code: Select all
<a href="msnim:add?contact=smarterchild@hotmail.com">Add me</a>

Programs can register their own protocols with Windows, to enable the creation of links such as the ones you have stumbled upon.

Basically when you click on the "msnim:" link in your web browser, it passes the rest of the link to whatever program has registered the protocol "msnim".

Other common programs which take advantage of this feature are

XFire, TeamSpeak and Steam.

Hope this helps,
