Naming layers the same as the file name you are copying from

Postby jadelion on Wed Sep 20, 2006 10:50 pm

I know that title sounds confusing, but i was wondering if there is anyway to automatically name a layer the same as a separate file. For example i am creating a layered Photoshop file that contains a bunch of photos and i want each of the layers to be named the same as the separate photo files i am copying them from - make sense?

Anyway, just wondering if this can be done without having to manually type or paste in the file name.

Thanks!

Can't think of any way .. Copy/paste.

No way I can think of either but......

If you have a copy of Adobe Bridge, you could do it in reverse, changing the file name to match the layer name with the Batch>Rename command.

Best solution I could think of. Sorry.

OK, I just found another- better- answer to your question. Maybe. You have to have Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Bridge for this. Go to Russell Brown's website, http://www.russellbrown.com/tips_tech.html and look for the "Dr. Browns Services" installer. Dr. Brown's Services are a compilation of scripts that appear in the tools menu of Adobe Bridge. One of the tools therein is Dr Brown's Merge-A-Matic, a script that takes several documents and merges them into a single multi-layered photoshop document. The names of the layers are the names of the documents.
