Need help with objects!!!

Need help with objects!!!

Postby smorrissey23 on Tue Dec 11, 2007 10:03 pm

I have a problem that seems like it would be an easy fix, however, I can not get it to work. It seems similar to the "COOKIE CUTTER" post a little while back except I'm not working with text...just objects. I am working on Illustrator 9. I have an image that I made in Illustrator consisting of 9 objects. I want to create and ellipse (which I know how to do) and overlay it on top of part of the original image. Then, every part of the original image that is INSIDE of the ellipse, I want to Cut away or erase so that part of the original image is gone or at least transparent. It is very easy to do on Photoshop...just place the ellipse where you want it and goto EDIT>cut...but nothing I try in Illustrator works. I've tried grouping and pathfinder effects, clipping masks...nothing seems to work. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. It seems like it should be such an easy fix...so I apologize for being so ignorant. Thanks

I'm not completely sure what you are trying to achieve exactly. But it is sounding like the "donut effect" I think.

You want a hole cut out of another shape. Is this correct?

You need to have the part that is the hole ON TOP of the other shape...have both selected then Object>Compound Path>make
