Newbie to PS, please help!

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone can teach me how to do this...

When I turn a photo to black'n'white, how can I then make one particular part of the photo color?

Eg: Photo of a baby is black'n'white and I want to highlight baby's eye's blue? How do I do this???

Please help, all help muchly appreciated!

Normally you take a normal colored photo, copy the layer, desaturate, then erase to reveal the background (colored photo). In this case since it's already black and white you can create a new hue adjustment mask layer and recolor the eyes.

Anyway here's my go at it:

And where can I find the "desaturate" button in PS Elements 6.0 version???

That effect is exactly what I am wanting to achieve, but can't seem to follow what you did...eeekkkk

Here's a breakdown (for cs3, although the same technique should apply):
Take the b/w image -->
1. Layer > New Adjustment Layer
2. Check colorize box, adjust sliders until you get the desired color (don't worry you can change it later if it doesn't look right), click ok
3. On the layers window, fill the mask layer of the adjustment layer with black, and set the adjustment layer blending mode to "color."
4. On the mask layer, take the paintbrush tool and color the areas you want colored with white (white reveals, black conceals)
5. Doubleclick the adjustment layer if you want to change the color.

Sorry still can't figure it out, CS3 version must be different or I am dumb as dog sh*t! hahaha
