odd behavior

odd behavior

I'm new to illustrator so maybe some one can tell me why this happens and how I can fix it.

I have one object, it's a black outline of an eye. I had the lower eye lid overlap the eye but for some reason wherever the the black overlapped, it became white. The rest of the outline was still black and looked right but wherever it overlapped it was white which made it look funky.

Any clues on how I could fix this. This isn't what I want at all. Thanks.

Not sure, but my guess is that you have may have that pathfinder thing on. Go to window > pathfinder.

There a bunch of commands that allow different objects to interact with one another in different ways to create a 'new' shape. You could merge them, ignore areas that don't overlap, remove one object from another, etc. It sounds to me like you may have activated one of these "Shape Modes" - most likely the "exclude overlapping areas (most top right option in the pathfinder menu).

The wierd thing, though, is that the makes the selected shapes act as one shape so I think you would have noticed it had you accidentally turned it on...

Sorry, that's my best guess.
