Pattern How to?

Postby magicmouse on Thu Jul 09, 2009 9:31 pm

hey guys,
first of all Hello all im magicmouse :)
secondly here is why ive come!....
I need some help, normally im ok in photoshop however I found this image on-line and i would like to be able to create a similar pattern for a background desktop image.
however i have thus far been very unsuccessful. the closest i managed to get was manually drawing all of it with my graphics tablet

i just cannot figure out how they have created the image / pattern. would any one be able to advise on this?
to me it looks like they have made a brush, stroked it then used another brush and then use the wave filter? but if i do that it looks nothing like what they have managed to produce, unfortunately i do not know the authors and so i am unable to ask them! :'(

i have attached the image here.
please any help would be much appreciated i have been trying and thinking about this for several weeks!.
if it is something easy that im missing then please tell me / link to tutorials, i have tried looking for tutorials on light and waves but none of them seemed to help.

Kind Regards,
Magic mouse

hi,

First I didn't see no image in your post.... be that may....

as far as creating a pattern, yo can select a portion of a image and make that a pattern.... i suggest go to your ps help section they have a nice tutorial there ... just do a search for creating patterns or using the pattern maker (pattern maker should be in your effect menu..) .....

now here a link on a tutorial on making a pattern.. maybe this is closer to what yo want...

I hope one of the 2 is useful for you

There are many ways to accomplish the same thing in Photoshop; in your case, here is what I would do...

It appears there are three lines (A thick solid one, a thin one with a glow, and a really thin thread like one. The image seems to just be an intertwining of these three lines across the canvas with slight color variations along the length of each thread. If this is indeed the case production of the image can be broken into the individual creation of each line.

Thick Line:
1) In a new layer Create the line using the Brush tool or (if you prefer) the Pen tool. You want a thick and solid line - not a feathered line.

2) Color it a faded Cyan color (I would guess around 200 / 210 Hue with 60 / 70 Saturation)

3) Enter Quick Mask Mode (press Q) and then render Black and White Clouds (filter > render > clouds)

- Play with the distribution of Black and White to achieve the desired result (I recommend using the Curves tools to do this (image > adjustments > curves / ctrl + M)

4) Exit Quick Mask Mode (press Q again) and then delete. What should be left is a slightly faded, Cyan colored, Thick, Solid line

The Medium Line:
1) In a New Layer create a line with moderate thickness (in the image appears to be size 5) with 50% solid. This line should follow the approximate inverse of the Thick line (Sine vs Cosine).

- It should be noted that this line changes thickness (gets thicker) as it moves towards the right of the canvas - like a twisted Ribbon. If you wish to incorporate this effect it may be best to create the Line with the Pen Tool meaning the thickness change must be created manually

2) Color this line a deeper blue as compared to the first, maybe 80 Saturation with 220 Hue

3) Add an Outer Glow that is a bright Cyan (100 sat, 210 Hue roughly). What should be left will look very similar to what they have. To make it exactly perfect play around with an Inner Shadow, but no more than 50% opacity because it is fairly faint

The Thin Line:

1) It appears to just be a line that slowly changes saturation and color across the canvas. This color change can be best accomplished with a Gradient overlay.

The image wont look perfect, but it should give you an idea how many of the effects are achieved. The rest is up to interpretation and specific placement.

Good Luck with you recreation, tell us how it goes!
