Photoshop vs. Illustrator?

Postby shae923 on Wed Feb 13, 2008 7:15 pm

Photoshop has a "companion" software program called Illustrator. What does this software do that Photoshop does not do?

Photoshop is more for photos, and Illustrator is more for drawing.

Check out these videos from the Adobe website:

To expand a bit on what Kimberly said, there are two types of graphic images- bitmap and vector. Butmap images are exactly that, pixels laid out in a grid, and each pixels contributes to the image as a whole. Vector graphics deal more with line drawing types of images. Company logos are a good example of vector images.

The main advantage of vector graphics is that they are infinitely scalable. The same grphic that you use for your letterhead can be used on a canvas overhang on the side of the building. The main disadvantage is that vector graphics are limited in their complexity and number of colors.

What Photoshop does for bitmap images, Illustrator does for vectors.

I would. Both products are available in the same software package (Adobe's Creative Suites), both apps have the ability to open each others' file formats, and both compliment each other nicely. Photoshop's expanded selection/masking tools can be of as much aid in Illustrator as Illustrator's expanded path creation tools can be in Photoshop.

Adobe has gone to great lengths to specifically design both products for maximum compatibility. One can import Illustrator's .ai files directly in Photoshop and use them as smart objects. Conversely, you can import a .psd file in Illustrator and use Livetrace to create a vector graphic based on the Photoshop file.

Do they do the same things? Of course not, but each expands the capability of it's sister application. With all due respect Alk, saying that the two apps don't qualify as companions is a little like saying my wife and I don't qualify as companions because we're entirely different sexes.
