Pixel Aspect Raitio choices?

Postby Jones3030 on Thu Jan 15, 2009 12:25 am

I am making animation frames from scratch in Photoshop CS3. I will later import these frames as a sequence into either Final Cut Pro or Quick Time Pro.

I want the final animation to be at a true 1920 x 1080 (I prefer to stay at this size as opposed to each frame being converted (in FCP or QTP) to 1280x1080 or 1440x1080).

Under "New", I have my first file set up this way (see pic below).

Under the "Advanced" tab, I have a choice of different Pixel Aspect Ratios (see below). This is where I get lost. I do not know what all of them mean but I am fairly sure that none of them cover 1920x1080. As well, I am not sure if square pixels are the right choice either. The final animation will be used for web, computer monitor, projection and television (I believe that makes a difference).

My NTSC Choices are:
Square Pixels
D1/DV NTSC (0.9) = 720 x 486 or 720 x 480
D4/D16 Standard (0.95) = ?
D1/DV NTSC Widescreen (1.2) = 720 x 480 or 720 x 486
HDV 1080/DVCPRO HD 720 (1.33) = 1440 x 1080 or 960 x 720
D1/DV PAL Widescreen (1.42) = 720 x 576
D4/D16 Anamorphic (1.9) = ?
DVCPRO HD 1080 (1.5) = 1280 x 1080

Any help on choosing the right PAR or shedding some light the matter would be much appreciated!

Many Thanks,
Jones

first off, what are you using this video for? If it is only for computer/web use you can use square pixels. Many of those other settings I think are for DVDs and whatnot because those players render video differently. I read an article once that went over all of this so if you googled video production aspect ratios I'm sure you could find something

I did a quick search and found two articles that should be of some help.

http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffect ... 7f3aa.html

http://www.geniusdv.com/news_and_tutori ... ratios.php

and here is a quote from the second one that helps the most:
"HD standards were drawn up with square pixels in mind"

The video will be viewed on everything... the computer, web, projection and tv. What if I made two versions, one for TV broadcast and one for the computer. And the one for the computer was made in square pixels... what would i make the other one in. Or is there one setting that is more universal?

I spent a good amount of time today on google trying to figure this out. I found one site that 1920x1080 is special and needs no conversion like the other sizes. And if I chose square pixels with this size it will just work on everything... Other sites say I need to convert down to 1440 x 1080. Not sure what its true.
