hi,
first of all the commercial company generally will tell what they need
the image to be in... and generally that will be about 240ppi or 300dpi
now keep in mind... dpi is for printing resolution... and ppi is your image resolution.... they are not the same but there is a relationship... you generally want your ppi setting to be ner the printer's dpi setting that going to be used..
with that said
the short answer to your question is.. when you first start a new blank canvas , you get a windows where you can put in the numbers .... at that point putin your a4 deminsions.... and set your resolution for 300 ppi...!!! now you don't have to worry any further just finish the project and submit...
now your all set.....
note: i am not sure where you get the 72 dpi.. it generally 72ppi ...
for display purposes on a monitor 72-96 ppi is considered satisfactory for webpage display ..... since most monitor can't go above 100..

I've been assigned by my college to come up with some college band leaflets. Now I'm not professional with photoshop, but know it fairly well.
As the leaflets will be professionally printed by the college, 72 DPi aint gonna cut it with quality, I've heard 300 DPi is a good choice but i need to keep the dimensions within an A6
how to i keep the pixel to resolution ratio if you know what i mean?
i heard it was something like the dimensions in inches times the resolution to get the pixel dimensions to work in but Im not sure.
If anyone can help out it would be great.
Peace
