Google Sitemaps

Postby rse on Mon Aug 15, 2005 2:08 pm

What does everyone think about the new Google Sitemaps program (https://www.google.co.uk/webmasters/sitemaps/login). Has anyone seen any benefit from it yet?

On face value it seems like a good idea but i'm interested to hear other peoples views on the benefits and pitfalls of using it.

Cheers

I have tested it on several sites and friends have done the same, I haven't seen any improvments in the indexing speed.

I tried using this and found it a bit cryptic but I'm also not used to setting up servers and scrits on webservers. I ran into trouble using python on my server and I'm not sure if that's my fault or my hosts. Seems like a pretty cool idea though.

You don't need python on your server, there are many different services that generates a sitemap for you, try this one for example:

There are mixed thoughts on this in as much as Google stands to gain more than the webmaster.

At the moment, Google spiders "Good" sites every few days or couple of weeks.

If/When these sitemaps become more prolific, Google will be able to scedule it's spidering according to webmasters predictions which will in most cases end up being less often than now for good quality sites. resulting in a lower demand on Google resources thus reducing capital investment.

Remember you are being asked to predict how often content is updated but at the same time do you want Google reducing its visits from the current frequency.

So if you tell Google that content changes weekly and it in fact only changes ever couple of months then you have misled Google. Will this be seen as bad in the eyes of the Google Algo or just a forgivable poor estimate.

If you tell Google that your content is updated every 2 months then you are likely to get far less visits than you do now.

My inclination at this time is to leave things as is until I judge it prudent to join this particular Guessing game.
